"Not bad at all."
Looking at the card in his hand, Alex couldn't help but smile slightly.
If he had a belt or a wristband right now, he might even cosplay as a superhero from the tokusatsu world.(T/N: Kamen Rider.)
With this thought in mind, Alex's smile widened, and he couldn't help but shake his head.
With the help of abstract magic, Alex had successfully transformed most of his magical energy into various superpowers, most of which were based on "genetic mutation" as the foundation for his extraordinary abilities.
Originally, Alex had planned to turn himself into a mutant-like entity similar to "Legion," storing countless superpowers in his body, able to use any of them at will.
However, unlike Legion, who stored many different powers and also possessed multiple personalities, with each personality taking control when using a specific power, Alex didn't want to complicate things. Instead, he chose a simpler approach—connecting the superpowers to specific superheroes and creating them into cards.
This way, it would be easier for him to use them.
For example, this card depicting "Blink" was linked to superheroes from the X-Men and Inhumans, and even powers like Spider-Man's or the Hulk's were included on the list.
Whenever Alex desired, he could simply pull out any card he wanted and use the superpower corresponding to the hero depicted on it.
However, since this world didn't have magic, Alex couldn't bring his timepad with him, so he had no way to replenish his magical energy to compensate for the card usage.
Fortunately, Alex's devouring magic was still active. As long as he was exposed to sunlight, he could absorb solar energy to restore his "power," and in an emergency, absorbing some special energy wasn't out of the question either.
But for now, Alex didn't need to worry about running low on energy. With the amount of energy he carried, using every card wouldn't drain him.
Casually slipping the Blink card back into his pocket, Alex began to survey his surroundings, checking out his current situation.
The body he was inhabiting was named David, a name so ordinary it couldn't be more common.
When Alex took over this body, the memories within the person's soul were automatically transferred to him.
This 20-year-old young man didn't lead an extraordinary life. His parents had passed away when he was young. Currently, he was attending Preston University, working part-time and participating in various club activities.
What caught Alex's attention was that Preston University wasn't a prestigious school at all—it was a "fake" university. Although it was only one letter different from Princeton University, the status was worlds apart.
Overall, the original David was a "mediocre" kid. He was kind, compassionate, and though lacking in ability, he was passionate about everything and even had a girl he was pursuing.
But this lively young man had died innocently in the crossfire of a battle between heroes and criminals.
Alex's gaze slowly drifted past the posters on the wall—Homelander, The Lamp-Lighter, Deep Sea, The Invisible Man, and his favorite Queen Maeve. Each superhero was smiling, appearing so sunny and bright.
But for some reason, Alex could see a trace of mockery in their smiles.
Now, he was certain—this world was the one from the TV version of The Boys, not the comic book version.
There were significant differences between the TV series and the comics, especially regarding the Seven, whose costumes had been adapted in various ways for the show.
But why was Alex in this version of The Boys? That was something he was quite curious about.
Approaching the desk, Alex slowly picked up the Queen Maeve action figure. It was one that hadn't been opened yet, and it even had Maeve's autograph on it. It looked very valuable.
"You must really like her," Alex muttered to himself.
While lost in thought, his phone in his pocket suddenly rang. After a brief pause, Alex remembered what the device was.
Having been away from phones for so long, Alex had forgotten how basic such a communication tool was. With magic at his disposal, he rarely used such mundane devices.
Taking the phone out, the caller ID showed "Little Cricket."
Staring at the name for a while, Alex finally pulled the corresponding memory from the foreign mind.
This "Little Cricket" was the original owner's neighbor, a lively and cheerful girl named Emma Meyer. Her dream was to attend Godolkin University, a school specifically for extraordinary beings, and become a true superhero.
Yes, this girl was an extraordinary being. Little Cricket was the "stage name" she had given herself a long time ago. She often streamed and posted videos on social media, though she was still a minor blogger with little fame.
The phone kept ringing, pulling Alex back to reality as he gently answered it.
"Hello," Alex said casually.
"Hey! I heard something happened at Kroger, the place you work at. Are you okay? Mrs. Lisa said a lot of people died there, and there's gunfire everywhere. The police have surrounded the area, not letting anyone in or out!"
The moment the phone connected, an energetic and enthusiastic voice came through, which caught Alex off guard, still not fully accustomed to "possessing" a stranger's body.
"Cough, cough."
Clearing his throat, Alex interrupted her words before speaking quietly.
"Emma, I didn't go to work today."
"..."
There was a sudden silence on the other end of the line, and it lasted for several seconds.
After a while, Emma's voice finally returned.
"Did you get possessed by a ghost?"
Hearing this, Alex raised an eyebrow and immediately denied it. "Of course not. If you got possessed, I wouldn't get possessed. Why do you say that?"
"Please, you?! The old money-obsessed workaholic doesn't go to work on time? Unless the sun rises in the west, or I join The Seven," Emma said dramatically.
"Don't say it like that. I actually think you have potential to join The Seven, but when that time comes, maybe they won't even want you to join," Alex replied casually.
"Hahaha, you sure know how to say nice things. If that day really comes, I'd be happy, but I doubt Vought would want a 'little bug' in the legendary Seven," Emma said with a laugh, but her tone carried some disappointment. It was clear she wasn't very fond of her own abilities, though she quickly cheered up again.
"By the way, did you know? I gained two more followers yesterday. If I gain one more today, I'll break my record for the most followers gained in a week!"
"Is that so? Congratulations," Alex responded, though his focus was still on the memories of the original body. He wasn't very familiar with this world.
Perhaps sensing Alex's lack of interest, Emma quickly changed the topic.
"Hey, you still haven't told me why you didn't go to work today. What happened?"
"Nothing. I just... wasn't feeling well," Alex thought for a moment before softly replying.
"Not feeling well?" Emma immediately asked. "What's wrong? Don't tell me you're sick, is it serious? Do you want me to go with you to the hospital?"
"Uh, no need. It's just a small cold. You remember that medical kit I have at home, right? I took medicine last night and today. I'm feeling much better," Alex quickly assured her.
Upon hearing this, Emma seemed to relax considerably.
"That's good. But luckily, you weren't feeling well today, or you might've been stuck at Kroger. It's so dangerous there right now, a lot of people probably died, but that's just my guess. The heroes have already gone to handle it. It should be all cleaned up soon."
"'Handled perfectly,' huh?"
Alex shook his head slightly before agreeing, "Yeah, they should handle it."
"Speaking of that, will your sickness affect the party tonight?" Emma suddenly asked.
"Party?"
Alex didn't immediately recall anything about that.
"Yeah, the party at Anya's place tonight. It's her birthday. We agreed two weeks ago, remember? Don't tell me you forgot. Aren't you trying to win her over?" Emma asked, surprised.
"Ah, yeah, yeah, of course," Alex said, finally connecting the dots. It seemed the girl the original body was pursuing was indeed Anya.
After a brief pause, Alex replied, "Don't worry, I'll be there on time."
"Great, it's a deal then! We'll meet at Anya's house," Emma said cheerfully.
"Okay, it's a deal," Alex agreed.
"Bye, David~"
Emma hung up the phone with a cheerful tone.
"Bye."
After the call ended, Alex didn't immediately take any action. He remained frozen for a moment, still holding the phone.
"David, huh?"
He casually put the phone back in his pocket and silently pulled out a playing card from another pocket.
The card depicted a bald old man sitting in a wheelchair. His left hand's index and middle fingers were pressed to his temple, while his right hand was extended forward with all five fingers spread, seemingly using his powers.
"Please, Charles."
Staring at the card in his hand, Alex muttered to himself.
"I'm really not used to being called David."
