Chapter 178 The Inferno's Edge
Beside him, Rylan appeared with a flicker of light, his form shimmering as though it wasn't quite real. His fingers already weaving intricate illusions in the air, distorting reality to confuse the dragon.
Your journey continues with empire
Elora emerged from the shadows, her movements swift as she took her position behind Kaelen and Rylan. "Santi, what about the elders and King Solareth?"
Santi froze, her breath hitching as her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. She bit down hard on her lip, fighting to hold back the flood threatening to break through.
The moment was heavy. Rylan and the others didn't need to hear the words — her expression said it all. The elders, the king . . . they were gone.
They had failed.
An unbearable silence fell over the group, the weight of their loss settling like a dark cloud over the battlefield.
"What about Gorm and the magic circle?" Rylan demanded, his voice tight with urgency.
"Gorm's gone, and the magic circle is destroyed!" Helliana snapped, still catching her breath.
"And this dragon . . . T-this is the King of the Northern Mountains!" Elora's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Balaur was supposed to be sleeping in Scorch Peak!"
"It was awakened by dark magic from the underworld!" Helliana replied, her tone grim.
"Fantastic," Elora muttered, clicking her tongue in frustration. "Now we've got to deal with a dragon."
"We can't beat this thing," Rylan said, his voice trembling. "Balaur is a great wyrm — nearly a god. We have to get out of here!"
"We're working on it!" Golly yelled, his hands flying over the broken runes. "Just help me with this magic circle!"
Their conversation halted when the dragon roared in frustration, its immense body writhing as it tried to penetrate the defense.
The intense heat distorted the air around them, creating shimmering waves that made it hard to focus.
Ri and the others continued their attacks. Each elemental strike was more desperate than the last. He wove together water and fire, creating steam explosions that crashed against the dragon's scales.
The fury of wind and earth surged around him, but Balaur's impenetrable hide remained largely unaffected.
Still, Ri refused to relent, even as his mana reserves dwindled dangerously low. His hands trembled with fatigue, but his eyes burned with the resolve to buy time as much as possible.
"Golly!" Rain's voice cut through the chaos, strained and urgent. "How's it going?"
The gnome artificer's face was a mask of concentration and fear. Sweat drenched his brow, and his hands worked furiously over the runes. "I'm almost there!" he shouted back, his voice croaking. "Just need a little more time!"
Helliana dodged another torrent of flame, her agility allowing her to weave in and out of danger. She could see the strain in her comrades' faces. They wouldn't last long at this rate.
Thorgar's earlier clash with Balaur had left him battered, and Thraigar was equally exhausted and injured.
Santi's breaths came in ragged gasps, and fought on with sheer willpower. Her once-pristine armor was now marred by scorch marks and dents, her movements slower but still effective.
Her eyes darted to Golly, who was their last hope. She could see the desperation in the gnome's movements and felt a fierce need to hold the line until the runes could be stabilized.
As the dragon's next wave of fire surged toward them, Kaelen's mountain peaks held firm, the stone deflecting the searing heat. He grunted with exertion, sweat mingling with the dirt on his face. His control over the earth was impressive, but even he felt the strain of maintaining such an immense barrier.
Rylan was flickering around the battlefield, and worked to create diversions. The dragon's massive form was constantly shifting, confused by the illusions that made it hard to determine which target to focus on.
Elora saw an opening as the dragon momentarily hesitated in its assault. She moved swiftly, her bowstring taut as she aimed for the dragon's exposed underbelly.
Her arrows flew with precision, finding their marks despite the chaos around her. Each successful hit was met with a roar of pain from the dragon, but it was clear the beast's anger only grew fiercer with every wound.
Rain's heart pounded as he watched the battle. The scene was a blur of fire, stone, and desperate combat. The smell of burning earth and the sounds of clashing forces filled the air.
His gaze shifted to Golly, who was making slow but noticeable progress. The gnome's hands moved with a frantic touch, and Rain could see the glimmer of hope in his eyes as the runes began to stabilize.
Balaur's roar shook the very ground beneath them, a guttural sound of pure fury. The dragon's next attack was unlike any before, a colossal wave of fire that seemed to stretch across the entire battlefield.
Rain's stomach dropped as he saw the fiery tide approach. It was an all-consuming inferno, threatening to engulf everything in its path.
Kaelen sensed the imminent danger, and intensified his efforts. With a determined shout, he raised his arms, calling forth even more massive columns of stone. The peaks of his mountain range grew higher, reaching toward the sky as they formed an even sturdier barrier.
The flames collided with the stone, the heat creating a dramatic clash of elements. The roar of the dragon and the grinding of stone against fire were deafening.
The heat was unbearable, searing through the air and causing the stone to crack and shatter. Kaelen gritted his teeth, his control over the earth straining under the immense pressure.
The walls gave way, crumbling under the relentless pressure, unable to contain the approaching inferno. Flames surged forward, an unstoppable wave of destruction.
Chi, Ri and the others moved instantly, rushing to Rain's side, their bodies tense as they prepared to shield him from the blaze.
Helliana, Santi, Thraigar, and the others could do nothing but watch, frozen in place, as the searing firestorm roared toward them, its blistering heat warping the very air.
Time seemed to slow as the deadly flames exploded forth, ready to consume everything in their path.
With a final incantation, the gnome completed the runes, a brilliant flash of light illuminating the area. The runes flared brightly, their energy stabilizing and forming a shimmering portal.
"Now!" Golly's voice rang out. "Get through the portal!"
