Chapter 404 191 Challengers
A few Trainers were slightly shocked. The dazzling illusion of the Ice Beam seemed to stem entirely from the cold air swirling around the energy beam, which was clear enough, but why is it so condensed?
The cold air around Smoochum’s Ice Beam, while seemingly impressive, was visibly dispersing as the beam traveled. However, on Altaria’s side, the energy of Ice Beam appeared to be condensed with remarkable technique. The icy energy was sealed within the beam itself, with no trace of leakage.
Was it all for show?
No—
As the two Ice Beams clashed and their energy ripples collided, the aftermath directly knocked Smoochum’s Ice Beam off course. Yet, Altaria’s Ice Beam maintained its original cohesiveness, traveling through the cold mist and striking the panicked Smoochum squarely!
Crack!
The energy beam exploded—not as a single point of impact dealing a fatal blow to Smoochum, but as countless icy energies sweeping over Smoochum’s entire body, engulfing it in cold.
Crack!
The sound of ice forming echoed as Simone swallowed nervously. Smoochum, an Ice-type Pokémon, had been frozen?
How exactly does this Ice Beam work?“Smoochum is unable to battle. The winner is… Terrance.”
The ice immobilized Smoochum for ten seconds without it being able to break free, so Scarlet promptly pronounced the judgment.
“The first battle was a breeze, huh?” The children of Old Green House were surprised to see Terrance’s effortless victory. Defeating the opponent with just one move—if the subsequent battles were also like this, there’d be nothing to worry about.
In the crowd, a voice murmured softly, audible only to its owner: “That Altaria’s Ice Beam mastery has reached a level even many Ice-type Pokémon can’t achieve. Its power isn’t overwhelming—not even exceeding Smoochum’s Ice Beam. But the way Altaria used it is what makes it so troublesome.”
The voice belonged to Kotoko. Observing Terrance’s Altaria in action, she was reminded of his identity as a Top Coordinator. Was this the strength a Coordinator’s style could grant to an outstanding Trainer?
This unique approach to executing a move, with such meticulous application, seems to be something only a Coordinator could achieve.
“Won the first battle.”
Terrance looked at the defeated Smoochum without any hint of surprise. It wasn’t just about the Ice Beam move—Altaria had been his primary focus for the past four months. While maintaining its usual training regimen, it also inherited all the experience passed down by its mother, the Mt. Chimney’s Overlord Altaria.
An Ice Beam, carrying an energy level lower than the opponent’s Smoochum’s move, managed to overpower the opponent through a unique execution method. By incorporating coordination concepts into aspects such as the move’s form, internal structure, and angle, the weaker move triumphed. In a way, a Coordinator’s understanding of some concepts surpasses that of most Trainers who rely solely on brute force.
If a Coordinator with strong coordination concepts also had absolute strength to back them up, their power would undoubtedly be terrifying.
Wallace was an example of this, and so was Terrance.
“As expected of a Coordinator.” Many people, upon seeing Altaria’s dazzling Ice Beam, assumed that the move must have heavily drained Altaria’s stamina. This thought put them slightly at ease, as Simone, the first challenger, didn’t seem particularly strong.
“Akin, why do you seem so absent-minded? By the way, why didn’t you grab a number card earlier? Aren’t you planning to challenge him?”
“Challenge? Forget it. That guy…”
“What do you mean?!” The person next to Akin asked in surprise.
“Terrance, and that Altaria… I knew I wasn’t mistaken. He’s one of those rookies who made a huge splash at the Battle Tower a year ago,” Akin said. As a regular at the Battle Tower, he had a strong impression of the numerous rookies who had suddenly appeared in the Beginner Area during that time.
Terrance was one of the most dazzling ones. As a rookie to the Battle Tower, he rapidly advanced to the High-Level Area of the Battle Tower in an incredibly short amount of time!
That was a year ago. Back then, he wasn’t even a Top Coordinator or a Gym Leader. Akin had been one of the first Trainers defeated by Terrance.
Even now, he still lacked confidence in challenging Terrance from back then: “Yeah, that Altaria defeated my Blaziken with a single Dragon Rush. Their strength has likely grown even more since then.”
What haunted Akin the most was the sheer madness that Terrance displayed during his final push, having Altaria repeatedly use Dragon Dance to strengthen itself. Every opposing Pokémon was swatted away by a single Dragon Claw, making it unstoppable.
“This Ice Beam is probably just a warm-up… no, not even that,” Akin murmured to himself.
There were a few other Trainers present who had been to the Battle Tower back then. Those with good memories even recognized Terrance. However, since so much time has passed, those who hadn’t battled him personally only have a faint impression.
“Huh?”n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
Akin, seemingly friends with the person beside him, noticed the number card in his hand and smiled. “Good luck.”
“I’m number 2.” At this moment, after Simone’s defeat, another person quickly stood up and raised their card. This Trainer looked to be around fifteen years old—about the same age as six or seven out of every ten Trainers present. The youthfulness on their faces hadn’t yet faded.
“Next, it’s my turn to battle.”
“The second one,” Rina muttered as she kept count. By now, they had already tallied the number cards distributed—191 in total. Did that mean 191 people wanted to challenge Terrance?
And this was only the second one…
Terrance had no intention of switching Pokémon. With so many battles ahead, Altaria wasn’t anywhere near needing a break yet.
In fact, if possible… Terrance intended to rely on Altaria alone to completely crush the fighting spirit of all 191 Trainers!
“The second match: Robbie from Carbeau Town versus Terrance from Fallarbor Town…”
“Robbie sent out Quagsire?! What kind of strategy is this? Is there something unique about this Quagsire?”
“Maybe it’s his strongest Pokémon. Plus, Quagsire can use Ice-type moves. Who knows what kind of plan he is aiming for…”
Unable to face Terrance themselves yet, many Trainers began whispering among themselves, speculating about how the battle would unfold.
But Robbie, standing in the arena, was feeling incredibly nervous. If he lost, it would be very embarrassing. Quagsire was his first partner, so he just wanted to have a solid performance.
