Chapter 457: Confederacy Rebellion -01
— 2 Days later - Serene Haven Hospital —
Daniel came to visit Envy along with Greed. The first thing he saw upon stepping into the VIP room was Envy busy in the kitchen, while Sylvana giddily anticipated eating the Cheesy Chicken and Vegetable Rice that Envy was preparing.
This VVIP room had been prepared by Greed according to the tastes of each witch. Naturally, Envy's room included a modest kitchen for her to enjoy cooking, even though it only had a small refrigerator.
"Oh! What have we here? Cheesy Chicken and Vegetable Rice?" Daniel said as he picked up little Sylvana and sat her on his shoulder.
Koyuki and Michaela were watching a Korean drama together. Michaela was so engrossed that she didn't notice her lord had arrived until Koyuki nudged her. Startled, she quickly greeted him.
"Ah! My Lord! Good morning!"
"It's high noon already; we're about to have lunch," Daniel corrected her, causing Michaela to blush deeply in embarrassment. She sat down, feeling depressed and lamenting her clumsiness.
But that only lasted for two minutes before she became engrossed in the drama again.
At that moment, an emergency broadcast suddenly appeared on all TV channels, stopping Michaela from enjoying her Korean drama.
Daniel's phone rang with a specific beeping tone he had set for emergencies. He quickly answered the call.
"Speak," he said with a commanding voice.
"My Lord, please open your personal notebook and check our site with the ID we've given you. We've updated the current situation for you to review," Albert's voice came through the phone.
"What kind of situation?" Daniel asked, still confused.
"It's on the TV right now, My Lord," Albert replied.
Hearing this, Daniel quickly instructed Albert to hold the line while he rushed to open his notebook. As it booted up, he moved to the TV to catch the emergency broadcast.
On screen, a reporter spoke rapidly, her voice filled with fear. "We've received a broadcast from the Confederacy. We're switching to their live feed now," she announced.
The scene changed to the Confederacy White House's conference room, where General William Moore, the Confederacy's Supreme Leader, stood at the podium.
"Greetings, my fellow Confederates, and to the hateful citizens of the US," he began. "I stand before you today to deliver an ultimatum to the US and its military."
General Moore paused for dramatic effect before continuing. "Retreat from the Confederacy immediately. Leave your weapons, equipment, vehicles, and especially your power armor behind! If you fail to comply within 24 hours, we will initiate nuclear war! We, the Confederacy, are not cowards; we are prepared to die alongside our enemies! We will pursue mutually assured destruction between us and the US!
The countdown begins now!"
Abruptly, General Moore cut the feed, leaving the screen black except for a 24-hour countdown timer that had begun.
The only thing that kept Daniel solemn was not the frightening and alarming news that General Moore announced, but rather the bulge on General Moore's head. The two bulges had a bit of torn skin and appeared to be forming into horns on his forehead.
"Did you see what I saw, Danny?" Envy asked, noticing that her beloved was focused on the replay of General Moore, particularly the bulges on his head.
"Are those what I think they are? Demon horns?" Daniel asked.
"It certainly appears that way," Envy nodded. "Those horns resemble Leviathan's. There's no doubt in my mind. I'm completely certain."
"So, Danny, what's the plan? We have 24 hours, maybe even less. Based on the General's appearance, I believe he accepted Leviathan's offer. He's probably using his soul to strengthen Leviathan in exchange for a meager amount of power," Envy explained.
"How can you be so sure?" Daniel asked.
"Because I was offered the same deal when I died," Envy replied with a confident smile. "I had a choice: accept the deal or engage in a soul battle, where the winner takes all. I chose the latter."
At that moment, Greed's cell phone rang, and she answered the call. Noticing this, Daniel told Envy to finish cooking and have lunch with little Sylvana first.
Meanwhile, Daniel checked the information that the Whispering Hall had updated on their website. The information detailed the current state of the Confederacy, which was very unstable, with many dissenters trying to usurp General Moore's power.
According to the information, these dissenters were all big businessmen and power players who didn't want to become war criminals when the US fully reclaimed the Confederacy. In other words, they were desperate to find an escape route.
General Moore was also desperate, with no way out. He had led the coup and promised significant benefits to those who cooperated with him. As long as he was in power, he would cater to them and offer good benefits.
But… the losses and damage the Confederacy sustained from this campaign were too much. As the self-proclaimed Supreme Ruler, there was no way General Moore could avoid responsibility. As a result, support from both the elites and the grassroots population within the Confederacy was quickly dwindling.
The trust and respect General Moore had accumulated throughout his life from the people of the Confederacy were gone. The situation had deteriorated to the point of nearly exploding into a full-blown rebellion.
The people within the Confederacy were different from those in the US. They were a bunch of supremacists who couldn't tolerate the feeling of being inferior, as their propaganda and education had nurtured them into that mindset. This also contributed to their dissent toward General Moore.
Of course, the situation deteriorated so quickly due to the work of the Whispering Hall. The information indicated that Albert had sent people to spread rumors and reveal dirty secrets that had been hidden within the Confederacy without the prior knowledge of its people.
The depression and pressure General Moore faced would have crushed most others. If not for the fact that the man in the owl mask had awakened General Moore as a mage, he would already have been assassinated by his people and some of the mage clans feeling the brunt of the war's effects.
