Chapter 1 – Abnormality Measurement
Part 1
“──Director. We’ve detected a special energy coming from that house again.”
A man in a suit says this. Many monitors are lined up in front of him.
In addition to the man, there are other adults in suits who are also working diligently in front of the monitors.
Then the woman in the suit, who is called the director… Hinako Oki sighs.
“Hah… what kind of energy is it this time?”
“It seems to be energy that distorts space-time…”“Space-time? Could it be that he’s time-traveled?”
“W-well, I don’t know for sure…”
“Hey, you need to make a proper observation! There are already so many abnormal phenomena happening around him… It’s not fair for him to get into trouble again!”
“Well, you can’t say that…”
Oki, who was upset, turned her attention to the monitor in front of her.
On the monitor, there was a picture of Yuuya’s house and a picture of Yuuya himself.
Oki looked at the picture with a somewhat enraptured expression.
“Speaking of which, since our organization was founded…”
“It’s been about three years.”
“Since just before the organization was founded, various supernatural phenomena have been confirmed all over the world, but I never thought that most of the causes would gather in this house…”
The staff members belong to a secret government organization that has been investigating the paranormal phenomena that have been confirmed in recent years: the Special Phenomena Countermeasures Bureau, or Special Bureau for short.
Their main task is to deal with paranormal phenomena before the general public becomes aware of them. In some cases, they may also protect or secure the target.
And the person the Special Phenomena Bureau had marked as their most important target was… Yuuya.
However, Yuuya had only been marked for the past year.
This was because…
“Originally, his grandfather was the target of the Special Phenomena Bureau…”
“But strangely enough, nothing happened to his grandfather.”
That’s right, the person the Special Phenomena Bureau originally focused on was not Yuuya but his grandfather, Yuunosuke.
“That person flew around the world and collected all kinds of things until the day he died, didn’t he?”
“That’s right. And all those things were things we should have collected and dealt with…”
“He got his hands on them before we could… and because of the things he got his hands on, we couldn’t get close to him either.”
Normally, items that cause supernatural phenomena are extremely dangerous, so one would have expected the Special Bureau that these people belong to to recover them with all their might.
However, even before the formation of the Special Bureau, Yuunosuke had collected supernatural items from all over the world, and these formed a strong force field that prevented the Special Bureau from even approaching Yuunosuke, let alone Yuuya’s house.
Fortunately, however, Yuunosuke had no power to activate or control the items he had collected, and on top of that, all the items he had collected were in a dormant state, so the Special Phenomena Bureau had taken a cautious but watchful stance until now.
However, the situation changed when the owner of the items became Yuuya, his grandson.
“I never thought that his grandson would be the key person…”
Yes, the items that were dormant when Yuunosuke was the owner suddenly became active when Yuuya became the owner.
However, due to the special force field, none of the employees were able to approach Yuuya’s house, so they were unable to retrieve the items.
However, even though they were unable to approach it, the Special Phenomena Bureau observed the paranormal phenomena around Yuuya as numerical values and decided that it was dangerous to leave things as they were.
“We need to contact him before something big happens…”
“Won’t he be suspicious if we just show up like this?”
“Of course, he will be suspicious, but we can’t afford to worry about that. If we don’t do anything, there is a possibility that he will be involved in a terrible incident. Besides, I have my own reasons…”
“…Director? What are you thinking?”
When the staff member looked at Oki with a questioning look, she continued.
“What’s wrong with that? Even if I wanted to get close to him!”
“She’s not backing down!?”
To the staff’s surprise, Oki took two photos out of her pocket and showed them to the staff.
“Look at this! Before the transformation, he was really cute, and after the transformation, he’s really cool… as a living being, he’s perfect!”
“H-huh… what are these photos?!”
“What do you mean, my collection?”
“Collection?!”
“Anyway, I want to use this as an opportunity to get to know him better!”
“No, no, no, aren’t you abusing your authority?!”
The staff member quickly stepped in to stop Oki from continuing to run wild.
However, Oki didn’t care at all.
“It’s okay! I wouldn’t be able to do this job if I didn’t have this kind of perk!”
“Eehh…”
“I mean, isn’t that right? Because of the nature of our work, we can’t socialize with ordinary people because we deal with confidential information… So if you marry someone who also handles confidential information, then everything will be solved, right?”
“W-well, you don’t have to be so impatient. You can get married.”
“You’re the one who just got married!”
When Oki shouted this, the male and female staff members smiled awkwardly.
Yes, due to the nature of their work, it is difficult for them to marry ordinary people, and like that male staff member, the only option was to marry someone from the same workplace.
As a result, the only single person in the current Special Bureau was… Oki.
“No matter what anyone says, I’m going to get close to him and work towards marriage!”
“Well… he’s a high school student…”
The staff member was surprised by Oki’s words.
Despite the staff member’s reaction, Oki continues.
“Well, jokes aside…”
“It didn’t sound like a joke…”
“Recently, it seems that there are other organizations that are interested in him. That’s why we can’t just leave him alone.”
Oki says this and looks around at the staff.
“We will do something to contact him before other organizations get to him first!”
“Yes!”
──And so the Special Bureau began to look for ways to make contact with Yuuya.

“This is the base of the Resistance─the underground shopping mall.”
“Wow…”
I was speechless at the sight in front of me.
A huge city existed in this underground space.
A ball of light shone like the sun in the sky, illuminating the entire underground space.
In addition, there were more skyscrapers than in Tokyo in my time, and although there weren’t many of them, there were things that looked like cars flying through the air.
“I thought that place was the base…”
At first, I had mistakenly assumed that the large room I was in was the entire Resistance base.
However, after moving from that place with Kazuya’s guidance and changing between several elevator-like vehicles…
I realized that a city of the same size as the ground was spread out like this.
Then, Kazuya let out a wry smile.
“Hahaha… It’s true that from the perspective of Yuuya-san, who received my explanation, this space would appear to be everything. But as you can see, this entire city is actually the Resistance’s hideout. Well, it’s more accurate to say that it’s the last place where the surviving humans live rather than a hideout for the Resistance.”
“I see… Then the people who were in that place before…”
When I asked this, Kazuya’s face darkened.
“…They are waiting for their families.”
“…..”
“As you can see, we live in this underground city, but we periodically go to the surface to investigate the movements of the mechanical knights and any other human communities that might be surviving outside of here. Well, the main purpose is… to bring back resources from the surface.”
“Resources?”
“Yes. Since the surface of the Earth has been taken over by the mechanical knights, the resources we can use are limited. So we periodically send Awakened Ones to the surface to bring back various resources, and that’s how we keep this city running. And this place is the only entrance to the surface. They are the families of the Awakened Ones who have gone to explore the surface, and they are still waiting for their family members who have not yet returned from their explorations.”
“…..”
I thought about the people I had seen in that place.
When I think about it, their faces had no light in them, and the air in that room was gloomy.
They were waiting for their family members who had gone outside.
But the fact that their family members had not returned meant that…
Swallowing the rest of the words, I asked about the point that had caught my attention in the conversation earlier as a way of changing the subject.
“…From what you said earlier, it sounds like you’re looking for other human groups as well as gathering resources, but how many have you found so far?”
Maybe there are other underground cities besides this one, and they’re communicating with each other.
While I was thinking about this, Kazuya shook his head.
“None at all.”
“Eh?”
“For the last hundred years or so, no other communities have been found. When humans started living underground a few hundred years ago, there were a few people who survived on the surface, but all of them were already protected. Even considering the years that have passed since then, there is no possibility that there are any humans left on the surface.”
“I see. So there are no more people hiding on the surface, and there are several underground communities like this one.”
When I asked him this, Kazuya shook his head again.
“No, all of humanity is… here now.”
“…Hmm?”
I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard Kazuya’s words.
All of humanity… is here?
“W-wait a minute. This city is big, but can’t it hold all of humanity? Are there other places like this?”
“──There are 200,000 people.”
This was a very shocking piece of information.
“The total human population right now is… 200,000 people.”
