With a heavy sigh, Alex took a great deal of effort to calm himself down.
If, at the start, Alex had seen the contamination as a strange and undefinable medium, now he had a more intuitive guess and feeling about its source.
The previous hypothesis was correct—the contamination indeed came from a higher realm. It was a twisted, erroneous, top-down radiation.
It could affect all lower worlds in a way that was beyond the comprehension of ordinary people, a force so elusive that it was impossible to observe or directly combat.
Now Alex finally understood why this contamination could interfere with the timeline and cross several universes to alter cognition. It wasn't a "force" at all. It was more like a form of mental thought.
A collective consciousness formed by countless individuals, filled with a multitude of tangled thoughts.
For the people in these multiverse worlds, this power was uncontrollable and inexpressible because the beings trapped in their cages would never be able to break free, let alone reach out to those higher entities.
"The real problem now is how to locate these IP addresses," Tony Stark said, breaking the silence. "These things could apply to any universe, and we have no way of pinpointing their specific locations."
"Got any ideas?" Alex asked softly.
"It's tough. They could come from any universe. This is still our 'known' universe, after all. I never had any contact with that farm boy's world before. Remember? I always thought they were fake."
Tony Stark shrugged, continuing, "If these comics are real, and if every comic represents an independent world, then our search range will be infinitely expanded. You get what I mean."
Alex rubbed his forehead with his palm and murmured, "Yeah, I get it. The contamination could come from any universe, even from worlds we can't observe."
"Honestly, Alex, I'm not sure if we should keep looking. This is beyond our capability."
After a moment of thought, Tony Stark's mood also grew serious. He stared at Alex and said,
"You have to understand, before the zombie crisis broke out in our world, I had never personally encountered the multiverse. I was only responsible for Earth's safety, like you remember me: the playboy saving the world. But this... this is just too unbelievable."
"I understand your concern, Tony. But have you ever thought about it? Your world never should have gone through all this. The Avengers, the X-Men—they're all innocent. They were caught in an unexpected disaster."
"I've thought about it, of course! For all the years you left me in that world, I never stopped thinking about it."
Tony Stark said with some agitation, "You know, I used to think that as long as I worked hard enough, my talent and intelligence could solve any problem. Even if it was Thanos, I'd take him on face-to-face."
"But I never considered that beyond our universe, there are even broader worlds, and each of those worlds has a high chance of threatening us."
"That's why, Tony, being a frog in a well isn't so bad sometimes. Maybe in other universes, some mutated virus is rampaging, or some evil deity is trying to conquer the multiverse.
"But the vast majority of people can live peacefully, going about their daily lives, working, playing games, dating girls. Why? Because they don't know."
Alex pulled out the cigarette case Constantine had given him, opening it again to find that the cigarettes had been refilled.
"Now, after knowing all this, what's your first reaction? No need to think too much, no need for any internal struggle. I just want to know your first thought."
"My first thought?"
Tony Stark paused for a moment before unable to suppress a bitter laugh.
"Damn it, I want to figure out the source of the contamination and completely eliminate this threat. I don't care about protecting everyone, I just don't want to worry about being dragged into another disaster like this in the future."
"That's it."
Alex snapped his fingers and lit the cigarette in his mouth.
"You see, Tony, it's actually quite simple. My thoughts are simple. I don't have grand ambitions to save the world or any of that nonsense. That kind of life isn't for me. I'm the type of person who just likes to mess things up.
"But everything I've been through, everything that happened before I got here, it all keeps reminding me just how dangerous these worlds are. That's why I can't stop. Do you understand?"n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
Upon hearing Alex's words, Tony Stark sighed deeply. "Maybe this is the curse of being smart? Sometimes I envy those who can just fall asleep, at least they don't carry so much pressure."
"We're all part of the story, Tony. You can't just fall asleep, at least the contamination doesn't want you to live so easily," Alex chuckled, his expression a bit complex.
"So what should we do next? These IP addresses aren't much help. If we want to figure out the source of the contamination, at least we need a more concrete direction," Tony Stark asked.
"That's not the issue, Tony. The contamination itself is the best investigation direction," Alex thought for a moment.
He had lost track of how long he had been here, from the moment he landed in the wasteland universe until now. Alex had lived through countless days and nights.
But upon reflection, it seemed that the places most severely affected by the contamination were mainly within the Marvel multiverse. In the DC Flash movie universe and the Apocalypse universe, there was no sign of contamination.
"From the look on your face, I think you already have a plan," Tony Stark observed, watching Alex in deep thought.
"Sort of," Alex lifted his head and smiled faintly.
"Why don't we cast our gaze a little farther?"
Beyond the eternal wasteland holy timeline—The House of Mystery.
Invisible Woman, Susan Storm, was once again checking the data on the energy control hub. After confirming that the temporal energy was normal, she made herself a cup of coffee, grabbed a blanket, and settled onto the sofa.
Reed Richards had already taken the heroes from the Wasteland to carry out their mission as per Alex's orders. Susan knew it was a dangerous mission, dealing with the zombie virus, bioweapons, and the like.
It would be impossible for her not to worry, but she also understood the importance of the situation. These multiversal crises were like swords hanging over their heads, and if not handled well, they could threaten more people, including themselves, in the future.
Curled up on the comfortable leather sofa, feeling the warmth surrounding her, Susan relished the rare peace and tranquility.
On the television screen, footage from the wasteland timeline was playing, and the main characters were her two children.
Franklin and Valeria had gotten used to the life in the wasteland. Though they had come from a relatively perfect era and faced many challenges in this world of collapsed civilization, it was generally safe.
The new Avengers' leader, Vivian, had arranged the best living environment for them, and watching her children's lives unfold every day was the happiest part of Susan's life.
After taking on the responsibilities of a overseers, Susan had made the decision to give up everything else. Now, she was fully committed to maintaining the peace of the wasteland. After all, this was not only for her own sake but also for her children.
As Susan was absorbed in watching her children on the screen, suddenly, the image on the television flickered as if there was a signal issue. The sound began to stutter as well, glitching in and out.
Susan froze for a moment, then furrowed her brows. She lifted the blanket and slowly sat up, her gaze fixed on the screen with confusion.
The House of Mystery was located outside the timeline, and its energy could self-sustain. There was no concept of 'signals' here, so such strange occurrences should not happen.
Standing up, the first thought that came to Susan's mind was that the House of Mystery had been breached by some external force. But this should be a very secure place, and the invasion alarms hadn't gone off, so she wasn't entirely sure.
However, just to be safe, Susan expanded her superpower field. She cautiously scanned her surroundings and slowly approached the television.
The screen was glitching intermittently, at times showing static and distortion. The sound was distorted as well, frequently cutting out and accompanied by harsh noise.
Susan held her breath, not daring to exhale. She then slowly raised her hand, intending to use her powers to investigate.
However, before she could make a move, the flickering images on the screen, which had been blurry one moment and clear the next, suddenly stabilized.
Then, a blue logo appeared on the screen.
