Chapter 28
"Aunt, how come you have time to come over today? Is there something on your mind?" Li Suniang asked casually.
"Oh dear... Look at me, I almost forgot. I'm getting old, my memory is failing me!" Aunt Yang slapped her thigh, remembering the purpose of her visit.
"Aunt, I think you're not that old. If you and the other three stood together, people might think you're the eldest sister!" Li Suniang said with a smile.
"Ah, you're really good with words! No wonder your son is also good at flattering people. I'd say he takes after you in that regard." Aunt Yang was delighted by Li Suniang's words, and like many women, she loved to hear compliments about her youth and beauty.
"Aunt..." Li Suniang had meant to tease Aunt Yang but ended up feeling a bit embarrassed instead.
However, she thought to herself that she wasn't as good as Xiao Zihao, who seemed to have inherited his flattery skills from someone. His chatter could soften people's hearts.
"Suniang, you mentioned last time that you wanted to rent out your family's land. I discussed it with Uncle Yang, and we decided to rent it after the autumn harvest."
Aunt Yang's words reminded Li Suniang of her previous mention of renting out the family land.
"If that's the case, then there's no need to wait until after the autumn harvest. After all, your family has been helping us with the land for a long time. Just give us a share of the grain as our food allowance."
To be honest, Li Suniang had already exhausted all her energy on the small vegetable garden in their courtyard, and she didn't have any extra strength to manage the outer fields. The vegetable garden, however, had not disappointed her, and the lush green vegetables made her happier than when she received her university acceptance letter. Her delicate hands had developed calluses from the hard work, but it was worth it.
When she first came to the village, the Yang family had already helped her sow the seeds, and they continued to help with the farming and fertilization. Now, with the harvest season approaching, they would also help with the reaping. This meant that Li Suniang's family would not have to lift a finger to get their grain, thanks to the Yang family's efforts.
So, when Aunt Yang offered to rent their land, Li Suniang was happy to accept. She had initially planned to find ways to repay the Yang family after the harvest, but now she could save herself the trouble.
"How can that be? We can't just take back what we promised to help you with! The villagers will think we're taking advantage of you!" Aunt Yang refused, shaking her head.
Li Suniang tried to persuade her, but Aunt Yang cut her off, slightly annoyed. "Don't say anymore, just do as I said earlier. If you don't agree, I won't rent your land, and you can rent it to someone else instead."
The main reason the Yang family wanted to rent Li Suniang's land was that their fields were adjacent, making it convenient to manage them together. Li Suniang, hearing Aunt Yang's firm tone, gave up her persistence.
"Fine, okay!" Li Suniang reluctantly agreed.
"Ah, that's right!" Aunt Yang smiled, seeing Li Suniang nod in agreement. "Okay, I've said what I needed to say. Don't forget to think about what I told you." Before leaving, Aunt Yang reminded Li Suniang again, waiting for her nod before smiling and heading home.
That night, Li Suniang lay in bed thinking a lot, her first sleepless night since arriving in the village.
Not marrying would mean she still had a future, but marrying would require considering many aspects. After marrying, she would likely have children, and with multiple children, she might not be able to give each one equal attention. She worried that she might unintentionally neglect Xiao Zihao, her eldest son.
Xiao Zihao was a sensible child, but she knew that having a second child might lead to neglecting the first, as she had seen in her previous life. Additionally, the villagers might gossip about Xiao Zihao being an "oil bottle" in his mother's new family.
Li Suniang also wanted to send Xiao Zihao to school, and she would discuss this with her potential husband. If he agreed, she might consider marrying him.
That night, Li Suniang thought deeply, leading to a sleepless night. The next day, she looked tired, with dark circles under her eyes.
That morning, Li Suniang yawned repeatedly, her eyes feeling tired and sleepy. Xiao Zihao looked at her with a puzzled expression, sensing that his mother was acting strangely as if she hadn't slept the night before.
The mother-son duo ate their breakfast in an awkward atmosphere when they suddenly heard a voice outside.
"Big brother, is it here? Why can't I open the gate?" A man's voice asked from outside.
Another man replied, "I don't know, just call out to them and you'll find out!"
Li Suniang and Xiao Zihao exchanged a glance, and Li Suniang's tired eyes widened as she felt a surge of tension. She didn't know who the visitors were, as she hadn't seen any relatives in the original owner's memories.
"Is anyone home? Come out and answer us!" a man shouted outside.
Li Suniang didn't want to respond, but she worried that if she didn't, the commotion would attract the attention of the villagers. So, she reluctantly went outside.
There, she saw three men in their twenties, exuding a rough and ruffian atmosphere. Li Suniang felt anxious, and her words came out disjointedly.
"Wh…who are you looking for?"
One of the men, who had been shouting earlier, leered at Li Suniang and said to a chubby man beside him, "Hey, big brother, this young widow is quite a looker!"
"Big brother, Matchmaker Lin didn't lie to us! Look at this young widow's figure, oh my, she's not inferior to those girls in the town's brothels." Another man with a dark face gazed at Li Suniang, almost drooling, and spoke with vulgar language.
"Hehe, little sister, don't be afraid! Open the door, big brother is thirsty and wants to ask you for a bowl of water." The chubby man's eyes lit up when he saw Li Suniang, and he smiled with ill intent.
Li Suniang looked at the three men outside, who were clearly up to no good, and felt both angry and afraid. She had only seen such ruffians on TV or phone in her previous life, never in real life.
She was a weak woman who had never learned any self-defense skills. If she had known earlier, she should have learned some, instead of feeling helpless now.
Just as she was watching the three people outside, nervous and scared, not knowing what to do, she saw Aunt Yang rushing over with Big Brother Yang and Second Brother Yang.n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
Zhao Shi had originally wanted to come over to chat with Li Suniang after breakfast, but as soon as she walked out of the house, she saw three men outside Li Suniang's yard, looking around, and they didn't look like good people.
So she retreated and told her mother. Aunt Yang then hurried over. As for her two sons, didn't Zhao Shi say that the three men didn't look like good people? They were afraid that her mother would be hurt, so they came together.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Looking at the three men who didn't look like good people, Aunt Yang asked with a serious face.
In fact, these three men were invited by Matchmaker Lin. In the beginning, Matchmaker Lin was driven out by Aunt Yang and threatened by Du Wei. After returning, she was more and more unwilling to let go, so she thought of a vicious way to ruin Li Suniang's reputation.
After all, a widow and a young and beautiful widow can tell right and wrong at that time. So she paid three ruffians in the town who usually collected protection fees to come to insult Li Suniang.
Matchmaker Lin was thinking that she would ruin Li Suniang's reputation and wait until she could no longer live. At that time, she would come to her house. At that time, she would have the final say in everything, and maybe the young widow would be grateful to herself.
Besides, the three ruffians didn't want to come at first, but they refused to stand the money given by Matchmaker Lin and heard Matchmaker Lin repeatedly say that the young widow was pretty good-looking. They thought they could have fun without spending money, so they rushed over early in the morning.
Not to mention that when the three saw Li Suniang, their eyes almost glowed green. What they thought in their minds was that Matchmaker Lin really didn't lie to them. This time, it was really not in vain. It was simply profitable.
"Hey, this Aunt, you came at the right time. It's just right to help my eldest brother be a matchmaker. My eldest brother has taken a fancy to the young widow inside." The black-faced man pointed to the fat man next to him and then said to Aunt Yang with a smirk. He was not afraid that what he said would damage Li Suniang's reputation.
"If you want to be a matchmaker, find a matchmaker. I'm not a matchmaker. Leave here quickly." Aunt Yang said sternly.
"Hey, this Aunt, don't be so ignorant and nosy. You should know that my eldest brother is a famous person in the town and is not easy to mess with." Another man said with a sly smile, but his tone was threatening.
Looking at the fat man who was called the eldest brother, he ignored Aunt Yang and the others and actually wanted to push the gate open and go in.
When Big Brother Yang saw this, he immediately blocked the gate and stopped the man from entering.
The man stared at Brother Yang, only laughed, “Hehe,” and then teased Li Suniang in the yard, "Little widow, don't be anxious. Wait until I get rid of this man and then come to have a good time with you."
With the arrival of Aunt Yang and the others, Li Suniang was no longer as scared as when she faced them just now, but her face still looked a little pale.
When she heard what the man said, she looked at Aunt Yang and the others with some worry, she was afraid that Aunt Yang and the others would be hurt because of her.
