Volume 3.5 Chapter 50: Need To Know
"Have you heard?! The son of Baron Stilword tried to attack the son of Marquis Freed!"
"What?! Aren't the two supposed to be friends?!"
"Hah, that's what he gets for trying to act buddy-buddy with everyone,"
Like that, the talk about what happened on Keith's island spread throughout the academy. For Keith, his expression was a little twisted.
Carolyn and Gabriel saw. However, they couldn't say anything about it. It was quite a shock for all of them.
The rumors going around were false.
What was said was Jack was detained for trying to attack another student. The expressions on Keith's face showed that he was the one.
"How could a Baron do that to a Marquis?"
"What is wrong with humans?"
"They have no control over their vassals."
Because of that, people started to criticize Jack for everything that happened. For other races, they continued to denounce the humans because of this.
Keith wasn't doing any of that.
Why did he do that? Keith was confused as to why Jack would do something like that.
The thing he was confused about was that only the cart was destroyed. He could have burned the garden and the rest of the island down.
But he didn't do that. It was only the cart that was destroyed.
...
Keith continued to have a weird expression all the way to lunch. The others stared at him with worry.
"Keith," Carolyn nudged him in worry. Keith looked at her. A soft smile formed as he patted her head,
"Sorry about worrying you. I was thinking about something,"
"It's alright," She could tell Keith wasn't angry. In the beginning, he was. But she could tell he cooled down.
"Ah, two days of hard work went down the drain. Sorry about that, Arlo." Keith apologized to Arlo. The two had been working on the cart for so long. For it to go into smoke like that felt wrong.
"It's fine, Leader." Arlo waved his hands, "This means we need to improve the design! We'll make it fireproof next time!"
"Indeed," Keith laughed. His mood lightened more.
...
When Keith returned home, he turned to the burnt cart. He bent down to touch the torched wood.
"Diana."
"What's the matter, Keith?" Diana appeared in front of him.
"I need to ask you something,"
"..."
"Why didn't you stop Jack?" Keith questioned as he stared at the spirit. He understood. Diana could stop Jack. She knew what was going on. Even if Diana was inside her home, she could sense people messing around.
"Tell me what you saw," A thought came to Keith's mind. Diana must have seen something that caused her to stop.
Diana sighed, "The boy was crying, Keith."
"Hmm?" Keith blinked a few times. Diana continued with what she witnessed,
"You're right. I sensed someone approaching the cart yesterday night,"
Since she was so close, she noticed Jack coming out during the night.
"I was going to stop him when I saw the torch in his hand. But I noticed the tearful expression he had on his face."
"..."
"When he lit the cart, I saw him crying and apologizing at the same time," Diana sighed.
"That was why I decided not to do anything. I'm sorry," It was a judgment call.
Keith shook his head, "I'm not mad about it. You made the right call," He was confused by all of this. But what Diana said brought a lot of clarity to the situation.
"I know what I have to do,"
"Aria!" Keith called. Aria quickly flew down to his side.
"I need you to bring this letter," Keith quickly took out a paper and wrote something before handing it to Aria.
"Ho!" Like that, the owl dashed off at blinding speed.
I need to know.
